About Island Girl Jewelry.
My love for working with metal grew during a 'cold metal class' I took at Warren Wilson college during my sophomore year.back in the late 90's. I was so in love with the idea of transforming silver and gold into wearable pieces and I wanted to learn more so i attended a jewelry metals/jewelry making class at the Penland Craftschool in NC to improve my skills. Fast forward a couple of years I wind up in NYC at Studio Jewelers a small studio school specifically for jewelry making tucked away in Midtown Manhattan. It was fate that I ended up in the same class as my now (handsome Bajan husband) who came all the way from Barbados to study diamond setting and all things jewelry. I learned that Ricky came from a family of jewelers and was self taught under his father at the very popular Lazare's Jewelry in Bridgetown Barbados. known by locals and tourists for their gold and silver handmade bangles.
After Ricky and I finished our courses we moved to Barbados where we worked in the family business while starting our little Bajan family. We got our start selling at farmers markets and craft fairs and a quickly made a name and brand for ourselves. A few Years later we ended up back in Vermont with a brick and mortar store and workshop where we dedicate our life to making beautiful handmade quality jewelry that can be worn for years to come.
